After an emotional first win in 10 games, Lee Jae-sung shares his thoughts.
Mainz published an interview with Lee on the club’s official website on September 9 (KST). Lee spoke about his recent performances, his thoughts on the upcoming matches, his call-up to the A-Match, and more.
Lee is now in his third season with Mainz. After breaking out last season with seven goals and four assists and becoming a key player for the team, Lee was heavily courted by coach Svensson over the summer and signed a new contract until 2026. 무지개토토 도메인
After a promising start to the season, Mainz plunged into crisis. After opening with three draws and six defeats in their first nine games. In particular, the loss to Munich left Mainz without a win in the opening eight rounds for the first time in club history. If you add in last season, Mainz hadn’t won in the league since May, going 14 games without a win. The team also suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the second round of the DFB Pokal Cup against Hertha Berlin, who are also in the second division and in ninth place, conceding only two penalties.
This led to the parting of ways with the coach. Mainz officially announced that Bo Svensson, who once led the club’s revival, would be leaving the team after the Pokal Cup match on March 3. “When I was preparing for the game, I heard that the head coach and assistant coach were leaving the team. He brought me to Mainz, and he was the reason I decided to play for Mainz, so it bothered me that he was leaving,” said Lee Jae-sung, expressing his feelings about parting ways with his trusted mentor.
In an emotional atmosphere, Mainz ended their unbeaten run. Against ‘powerhouse’ Leipzig, Lee Jae-sung scored his second goal of the season in the 31st minute with an all-out header. The goal energized Mainz, who added a second in the 35th minute to secure a 2-0 victory and their first win in 10 games.
Immediately after the goal, Lee collapsed to the ground in a celebratory gesture, lying down and pointing to the sky with both hands. “I ran a long way to score,” he said. I had no energy left for a few seconds after I scored. Thanks to this victory, we have come out of a very depressing period and have been re-energized. We consider this a turning point and look forward to continuing our winning ways in our next matches.”
