Kang Baek-ho was the key to Yoon Dong-hee’s big day at the Asian Games.
The Korean baseball team defeated Chinese Taipei to win its third straight Asian Games title at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, which concluded on Aug. 8.
Yoon Dong-hee, who played shortstop until his high school days and then switched to the outfield after his professional debut, was not initially selected for the team. However, after KIA’s Lee Yi-ri was ruled out with a finger injury, he took his place and made a surprise appearance in Hangzhou.
Yoon’s performance also allowed Kang Baek-ho, the No. 4 batsman who struggled early in the tournament, to drop to No. 6 and take some pressure off of him. It’s no exaggeration to say that Yoon Dong-hee’s performance was the difference between Kang Baek-ho coming through when it mattered most.
How did Yoon Dong-hee’s batting performances in the semifinals and finals lead to Baek-ho’s success?
On March 26, during the national team’s second official training session ahead of the tournament, Yoon Dong-hee and Kang Baek-ho were captured by a reporter’s camera taking batting swings.
“I was so curious about the secret of a long hit that I went to see Kang Baek-ho, and he told me that I needed to increase the acceleration of my swing by increasing the space behind me.” Yoon Dong-hee, who was a short-hitting player, asked Kang Baek-ho directly about the secret of a long hit.
With Kang’s advice, Yoon went 10-for-23 at the tournament with one home run and six RBIs. Five of her 10 hits were long balls. 메이저놀이터
