Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana’s struggles continue.
The Red Devils fell 2-3 in their UEFA Champions League Group A second leg match against Turkiye Galatasaray SK at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, on Thursday (June 4). The loss was United’s second straight in the Champions League and dropped them to the bottom of Group A.
After falling 3-4 to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the group stage, United needed a win against Galatasaray. United took the lead in the 17th minute through frontline striker Rasmus Höyrun. Galatasaray fought back immediately. Galatasaray equalized in the 23rd minute through Wilfred Zaha.
It was United who struck first in the second half. United scored again in the 22nd minute of the second half to make it 2-1. United’s lead didn’t last long. Galatasaray equalized in the 26th minute through Kerem Akhturkolu. Galatasaray was the eventual winner of the match. Galatasaray won 3-2 in the 36th minute with a late goal from Mauro Icardi.
Onana was named the starting goalkeeper for this game. Onana’s form this season has been far from satisfactory, with 15 goals conceded in 10 official games prior to this match. While Onana wasn’t entirely to blame for United’s concessions, his saves left a lot to be desired. In the first leg of the Champions League against Munich, he conceded a goal in the 28th minute when he failed to get a hand to Leroy Sane’s shot from straight on.
Coach Eric ten Hagg showed faith in Onana again, but he made another big mistake. In the 31st minute of the second half, Onana gave the ball away to opposing striker Dries Mertens in the buildup. Casemiro made a tackle to prevent a goal, but fouled Mertens and was sent off for accumulating cautions.
Icardi was able to escape blame as he missed the penalty, but it was enough to make the United defense nervous. Despite being spared a penalty, Onana conceded a goal five minutes later in the 36th minute to Icardi. According to soccer statistics site Sofascore, Onana made only one save in the match. Sofascore gave Onana a rating of 5.9, the lowest of any United player. 메이저사이트
United parted ways with goalkeeper David De Gea at the end of last season after 11 years with the club. In De Gea’s place, United signed Onana for €52.5 million ($74.8 million). Onana was a protégé of Van Gaal at Ajax. In the 2018/19 season, when Ajax reached the Champions League last four under Van Gaal, Onana was the starting goalkeeper.
