After being released by Tottenham Hotspur, Tangi Ndombele has struggled to find his feet at Turkkiye.
Alasdair Gold, who covers Tottenham for English outlet Football London, said on Friday (June 25), “Ndombele, who joined Galatasaray on loan, is yet to make his first team debut. He came off the bench against Samsunspor and played 15 minutes as a substitute. He played 14 minutes in the UEFA Champions League against Copenhagen and came on as a substitute against Vasaksehir.”
Ndombele joined Tottenham in the summer of 2019 for a record fee of €62 million ($88.6 million) after being linked with big clubs during his time at Olympique Lyonnais. Spurs expected Ndombele to anchor the midfield, but he struggled in England. While his technique was excellent, he made his teammates work harder to defend with his lack of commitment.
Aside from his performance, there was also an attitude problem: He walked slowly off the field when he was substituted in the 24th minute of the 2021/22 English FA Cup third round match against Morecambe. Tottenham were losing 0-1 and Ndombele’s behavior was widely criticized. After falling out of favor with Antonio Conte, Ndombele was loaned to his hometown club Lyon in the winter of 2021, but failed to make the move permanent.
Ndombele spent the previous season on loan at SSC Napoli. The loan deal between Napoli and Tottenham included a €30 million option for a full transfer, which Napoli did not exercise. Upon his return to Tottenham, manager Enze Postecoglou cut Ndombele from his plans. Reduced to surplus resources, Ndombele was loaned out again to Turkkiye Galatasaray.
While he should find a breakthrough in Turkkiye, Ndombele’s resurgence remains elusive. He has started three games for Galatasaray this season and has yet to score an offensive point.
