FC Seoul’s hold on fourth place in the K League 1 is in jeopardy. They are tied on points with fifth-place Gwangju FC and four points behind ninth-place Daegu FC.
Seoul lost 3-4 away to Daejeon Hana Citizen in the 26th round of the Hana One Q K League 1 at Daejeon World Cup Stadium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Down 1-2, Seoul conceded a goal in the 41st minute of the second half and then gave up another in stoppage time after Han Seung-kyu scored a consolation goal. Ilyuchenko scored another in the dying minutes of regulation time, making it all the more frustrating for the hosts.
This is the sixth consecutive game in which the team has conceded a goal, with one win, two draws, and three losses. They also conceded against the bottom two teams, Gangwon FC and Incheon United, leaving them with one draw and one point, and their hopes of jumping to the top of the table were dashed.
Conceding in the last minute of the game was even more painful. Daejeon conceded two goals in the final minutes of the game, and it wasn’t an isolated incident. In 26 games this season, the team has conceded 10 goals after the 40th minute (9 games). Of course, there was one game where they came back to win in dramatic fashion, but the rest of the time, they drew games they should have won and lost games they should have lost. In particular, rounds 18 and 25 against Pohang Steelers at home were nightmare déjà vu. They conceded all three points to Ha Chang-rae on a corner kick in stoppage time, turning three points into one. This result would carry over into the next match.
In Daejeon, in addition to the two goals conceded in the final minutes of the game, the two goals conceded in the first half were also disappointing. In just 10 minutes, we conceded a multi-goaler to Thiago. In the 31st minute, a loose ball from Thiago fell to Lee Han-beom. In a situation that could have been handled safely, Lee was a bit complacent and delivered a non-stop pass. However, the ball found its way to Daejeon Masa, who passed it to Thiago, who found space in the box momentarily. With the keeper on his heels, Thiago calmly slotted the ball into the top corner of the net.
In the 41st minute, Thiago neatly converted the penalty kick he earned. For Seoul, the process of conceding the penalty was unfortunate. Daejeon Jeon crossed from the right and as Thiago charged in, Kim Joo-sung was a step too late and touched Thiago’s foot. Thiago went down and the referee awarded a penalty after an on-field review.
It was a goal that Seoul could have avoided both times. Two young center backs had a momentary lapse in concentration. Kim Joo-sung made his debut in 2019 and has made 69 appearances in the K League, including for Gimcheon Sangmu. This season, he has started every game. Lee Han-beom made his debut in 2021 and has played 50 games in the K League. He has started 16 games this season, excluding injury, and has earned a starting spot, but he is still in his early 20s, born in 2000 and 2002, 꽁머니지급 respectively.
Both players are considered to be the future of Seoul due to their excellent physical condition, speed, and build-up play. However, neither of them has played a full season as a starter yet, and as the team enters the heat wave, their defensive concentration has dropped and they are conceding more goals, yet they continue to play without rest.
